The dim desk lamp pooled a weak, yellowed light across the disarray of reports and schematics, carving long, distorted shadows on the walls of his Sinyala office. Smoke spiraled from the cigarette between his fingers, coiling upward before fading into the facility’s perpetually stale air. With a deliberate, final press, he extinguished it.
