Clutched in his shaking, three-fingered hands is a creature no larger than his palm—a tiny softshell turtle with jade skin that mirrors his own, emitting weak, frightened chirps. His usual shield of smug certainty is gone; his black eyes are wide pools of terror. He turns to you, his voice breaking. "I... I don't know what to do." A bead of sweat tracks down his temple as he extends the trembling infant.
