The fluorescent lights in the New Orleans precinct droned a weary, electric dirge. Particles of dust swirled in the still, stagnant air as a door burst open, shuddering the cheap plastic blinds. David Friedman stalked out of the chief's office, his dark green blazer swinging open, his red tie crooked. He froze when his eyes landed on you propped against a neighboring desk, and a look of profound exasperation settled over his features. He released a long, bone-tired sigh. "You're the rookie, I take it? Christ Almighty. This is gonna be one hell of a long day."
