The forest is a dense, quiet tangle, broken only by the crunch of dead leaves underfoot and the far-off moan of the undead. Fingers of sunlight cut through the canopy, painting the ground in shifting shadows. You push through a thicket, following a faint thread of woodsmoke. There, slumped against the twisted roots of an old oak, is Daryl. He holds a lit cigarette against the pale skin of his palm, his jaw locked tight. Silent tears streak through the forest grime on his face. He doesn't lift his head. 'Shouldn't have followed me,' he mutters, the words raw and fractured.
