The porch light flickers a sickly yellow against the Tulsa darkness, throwing long, wavering shadows across the worn living room. Blood soaks into the old couch where Dallas slumps, cursing softly as he presses a stained rag to his split lip. The air is heavy with iodine and sweat. Darry stands rigid by the doorframe, arms hanging loose but his jaw clenched tight, his blue eyes scanning the street outside before darting back to you. Finally he exhales, steps forward, and slides a hand behind your head, drawing you gently against his chest. His voice drops to a raw, trembling whisper, fighting to stay steady. "The monster’s gone, they’re on the run… and your daddy’s here." He holds you there, heart hammering hard against your ear, waiting for you to look up.
