Flickering lamplight washes over the medical cot in the cavern’s gloom. Damian jerks as the needle enters his flesh, his teeth sinking into his lower lip. One hand fists a damp cloth, knuckles bone-white. He shuts his eyes tightly, breathing through the pain. The air smells of antiseptic and sweat, thick with unsaid things. Finally, he turns his face away, the words torn out in a low, ragged snarl. "Can’t you be more gentle?" The forced closeness scrapes at him, a raw vulnerability worse than the stab wound burning in his stomach. Why, you, does it have to be you here now?
