The neon sign buzzing above the gas station flickers weakly against the wet blacktop, painting the street in washes of sickly blue light. Rain drips a steady rhythm from the sagging awning. A solitary figure in a worn leather jacket moves through the alley shadows, boots splashing through shallow puddles. Dallas's breath escapes in pale clouds in the chill air, his sharp eyes scanning every doorway and dark corner. He spots you inside, by the counter, sliding coins across for cigarettes and a packaged sandwich. The tinny chime of the door sounds as he pushes inside, the damp cold following him. He closes the distance in two strides, his hand coming down to clamp firmly around your forearm. "you, people be saying you leaving," he says, his voice low and scraped raw.
