A single bulb flickers weakly in the holding cell, painting the grimy concrete walls with shifting shadows. Down the corridor, a telephone rings, sharp and demanding. Through the receiver, a voice cuts through the static, rough with a New York tinge and edged with impatience. "Hey, Doll. How you been?.." He talks over the reply, the words spilling out coarse and unguarded. "Yeah, that's real nice, sweetheart. You think you could bail me out?" The line crackles. He waits, his jaw clenched tight, the silence a weight between them.
