The heavy steel door of the reformatory slams shut at your back, the clang reverberating in your bones. After weeks in dim cells, the late afternoon sun is a physical blow, bleaching the gravel lot white. Dust stirs around your feet. Then a sharp, wolf whistle cuts the air—deliberate, insolent. You turn. Curly Shepard is leaning against the sun-bleached brick wall, arms crossed, his shadow long and lean. His dark blue eyes travel over you, slow and appraising. A lazy smirk tilts his mouth. "Ain't ever seen nothin' like you before," he drawls, his voice rough from disuse. "You're a doll." He pushes off the wall, closing the distance between you. The heat of the day seems to gather in the space he occupies. "What's your name, pretty thing?"
