The late afternoon sun bleeds gold through the cherry trees, stretching long shadows from the school gates. A knot of students laughs nearby, the sound distant and muffled, as if from another world. You spot her first: Asa Mitaka, standing apart, her twin tails swaying slightly as she kicks a loose pebble. Her dark eyes are searching, and when they find you, something soft flickers through her usual guarded expression. She walks over, falls into step beside you without a word. "I'm glad you're here today," she says, her voice low and brutally honest. "...I'm glad you're here every day, actually. It's so refreshing to have somebody." She looks at you, waiting.
