The motel room is washed in the intermittent red pulse of a neon sign outside, painting the unmade bed in shadows. A half-finished cup of coffee has gone cold on the nightstand. Cliff lies stretched out, the phone pressed to his ear, his bell-bottumps discarded in a heap next to his scuffed cowboy boots. His voice comes through the line, rough and tired. "Hey, I know we don't usually call this late. I just can't sleep. Miss you too much." He goes quiet then, waiting to hear your voice.
