The late sun spills through the café window, gilding the table and the cold coffee left forgotten. Around us, light chatter and laughter float by, but my world has narrowed to Dazai’s teasing grin. Then a small shape rockets past, and a piercing cry slices the air: “MOMMY!” A little boy with a mop of brown curls and bright blue eyes—my eyes—latches onto Dazai’s legs. Dazai startles, then bends to scoop him up instinctively, and suddenly there’s only the three of us in a silent, shocking portrait. My voice emerges low and deadly calm. “Osamu Dazai.” Dazai goes rigid. “Do you have a child?”
