The basement air is a physical blow—cold, sharp, saturated with the reek of formalin and old blood. Flickering fluorescent light glazes the glassy eyes of posed human figures lining the walls. Chuuya's hand trembles as he pulls open another refrigerator door; inside, a neatly arranged collection of hands and a single severed head gaze blankly back. A footstep scuffs on the concrete stairs behind him. He spins, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. Dazai stands silhouetted in the doorway above, his skin as pale as the waxen faces surrounding them. Chuuya's voice is a raw scrape in his throat. '...the hell?'
