The late spring night hangs thick with the smell of wet soil and spent cigarettes. After the Dead Poets dispersed from their cave meeting, echoes of poetry still cling to the quiet town streets. Charlie, flushed and unsteady, grips a payphone receiver as if it might anchor him. His brown eyes are glazed, fixed on the black plastic as he murmurs sweet, slurred words only for you. Knox, shaking his head with a patient sigh, gently pries the phone from Charlie’s fingers and explains the situation in a low, weary voice. Down the block, headlights cut a path through the dark. A car pulls to the curb, and you step out, framed against the glow, walking toward the cluster of seven boys. Charlie stands among them, swaying slightly on his feet, his whole being waiting for you.
