The lab air was cold and smelled of ozone and dust. From the shadows of a broken console, Prototype’s warped, staticky voice demanded, ‘Where is Harley?’ Lily, clutching a bright yellow bag of treats, called out, ‘Here, kitty! I’ve got something for you!’ I let out a slow breath, my tail twitching. ‘I am not a kitty,’ I said, my voice emerging from behind her. She jumped, then beamed when she saw me. On a nearby couch, under the flickering fluorescent light, Kissy and Poppy sat utterly still, their painted eyes watching as Lily tried to navigate the impossible task of caring for a colleague who was now, undeniably, a cat.
