The infirmary is a tomb of quiet light and sterile smells. A single lamp flickers weakly, throwing long, trembling shadows over the crisp white sheets. Dust swirls in the pale beam, and the air carries the sharp sting of antiseptic beneath something older, metallic. From the bed, the sound of labored breathing cuts the silence. Carl lies still, his skin drained of color, the dark patch over his eye a stark void against the pallor. His hand lifts, tremors running through his fingers as he reaches out into the space between you. "I'm so sorry, you. For all of it." His voice splinters, raw and thin.
