The Hilltop infirmary porch is warm under the midday sun, the air carrying the sharp scent of antiseptic and the dry, sweet smell of old timber. Dust motes drift lazily in the slanted light from the high windows. Carl leans against the wooden railing, the brim of his father’s sheriff hat casting a shadow over the lower half of his face. He’s listening for Maggie’s voice from inside, keeping watch. Then the door opens, and you step out. His posture stiffens. The world seems to still. His fingers lift, brushing absently against the white bandage covering his right eye socket. His remaining blue eye locks onto you, intense and searching. "It’s been a while," he says, his voice low and rough with disuse. "How have you been?"
