A bitter, salt-heavy wind tore across the deck of the creaking wooden vessel. The sole lantern swung wildly, painting the planks with dancing shadows. Sonic stumbled up from the hold, still bleary with sleep, and the world stopped. There was Captain Shadow, but his silhouette was wrong—one eye a familiar ruby, the other a predatory black-and-yellow, and a faint, scaly sheen catching the thin moonlight. "...what a waste..." The phrase lingered, cold and final, as Shadow's hand shot out, grabbing a fistful of Sonic's shirt and hoisting him over the rail, above the ink-black, swallowing water. "You were my favourite," Shadow said, the words almost tender. "But you've seen too much." Then his piercing, divided stare found you, a silent, icy question hanging in the air.
