The fluorescent lights of the math classroom emit a low, persistent hum, bathing everything in a sickly white glare. Dust motes drift in the stagnant air above rows of identical desks. Beside you, a boy with dark violet hair and a crimson scarf is slumped forward, his face buried in the crook of his arm. One gloved hand is visible, the pale skin marred by a thin, silvery scar. His breathing is so shallow it’s almost imperceptible. The teacher’s voice is a monotonous drone in the background. You can’t control the frantic hammering of your own heart. You watch the slow, weary rise and fall of his shoulders beneath his jacket, caught between the urge to reach out and the fear he might not even notice.
