The fluorescent lights buzz a flat, steady note overhead, painting the high school hallway in a sickly pale glow. Chalk dust hangs in the slants of late afternoon sun, and the smell of old paper and floor polish clings to the air. The bell rings, sharp and dismissive, and doors burst open, releasing a current of chatter and shuffling backpacks. And then I see him—Rowan. His ash-blond hair is messy from running a hand through it, his shoulders tense under his jacket. He's nodding at something a friend says, but his warm hazel eyes are distant, shadowed.
