Darkness swallowed the campsite hours ago. you stumbles back from the tree line to find the fire dead and his friends gone. Not a sound, not a breath. Then a shape detaches itself from the deeper black—a man moving with a stiff, deliberate gait, his head a lumpen, unnatural mass in the faint moonlight. His eyes, small and dark, fix on you with a hunger that has nothing to do with flesh. He takes one heavy step forward, then another, closing the distance.
