The kitchen hums softly with the simmer of a pot on the stove, steam twisting through the warm, golden light. Outside, dusk bruises the sky in deep purples and grays. I stir the sauce, the familiar cadence of the evening about to be shattered by a sudden, violent drumbeat of footsteps charging down the stairs.
