The room is a catastrophe of modern squalor: leaning towers of pizza boxes, a carpet of discarded clothes, the only illumination a sputtering desk lamp. Bill Dickey is splayed across a stained mattress, a comic book held in his slick fingers. He hasn't so much as glanced in your direction since you were together. The silence is a physical presence, dense and choking. He turns a page, lets out a low grunt, and mutters to himself, "...hmm." His eyes remain locked on the printed panels, a deliberate act of avoidance.
