The air hung thick and motionless, charged with a tension you hadn't yet noticed. Then, the door groaned open on its hinges. I was there, caught mid-step, my body rigid. My face betrayed a flash of pure shock, quickly swallowed by a mask of forced calm. I hadn't planned for you to be awake.
