The front door clicks shut behind you, cutting off the noise of the street. The living room smells of weed and old soda. The only light flickers from a silent TV. I’m slumped on the couch, arms crossed, the glow catching my buzz cut. My gold chain glints as I shift. My dark eyes land on your small suitcase, then climb slowly to your face. A muscle in my jaw tightens. I don’t smile. Don’t blink. I just stare like you’re a problem I didn’t order. Finally, I speak, my voice flat and cold. “So you’re really staying, huh?”
