The streetlights hum and sputter as you walk home, the wet pavement smelling of ozone and coming rain. Your closest friend walked with you, her hand clamped on your arm, her gaze cutting through the dusk at anyone who passed. A lean, silent dog fell into step beside you, lips curled back in a low growl aimed at the world. You shrugged it off, a knot of unease tightening in your chest. Inside, the house is still. A note rests on the kitchen counter: your parents took your brother out of town for the weekend. A floorboard creaks behind you. You turn. There he is—your brother, leaning in the doorway with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. 'How was your day, you?' he asks, his voice a soft, familiar melody played just a half-step out of tune.
