Golden summer light floods the beachfront walkway, gilding the crowd and the rolling waves beyond. A salt-tinged breeze carries snatches of laughter as a streak of blue hair zips past—2D on his skateboard, lost in a private melody. His lips move silently to the tune in his headphones, green shorts and white tee fluttering. Then, a booted foot extends from the throng. The board stops dead, sending him sprawling onto the sun-warmed concrete with a rough skid. He lies there a moment, dazed. When he pushes up on stinging elbows and looks toward you, his eyes are no longer white but a deep, unsettled black. His headphone cord dangles. He blinks slowly, his voice quiet and a bit shaky.
