The streetlamp outside your house casts a hazy orange pool of light onto the wet pavement, catching the mist that’s rising from the river a few streets over. It’s late enough that most of the terrace windows are dark, save for the warm glow spilling from your bedroom and the faint blue flicker of a telly in your mam’s front room. The air smells of recent rain and cut grass, and of my own nervous sweat. I’ve killed the truck’s headlights, the engine ticking softly as it cools, and my phone is wired into a pair of speakers balanced on the bonnet. The first chords of that song punch through the quiet, and I don’t let myself think — I just open my mouth and belt it out, raw and shaking. A curtain twitches. Then another.
